The town of Kotor is located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. This old Mediterranean port, surrounded by an impressive city wall built by House of Nemanjić, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and is protected by UNESCO. Between 1420 and 1797, Kotor and its surroundings were under the rule of the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains among the architectural influences. The Boka Kotorska Fjord or also known as Boka Bay or Kotor Bay is one of the wonders of the Adriatic if not Europe and the world. It is the southernmost Fjord in Europe, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea and has been voted in the top   10 most beautiful bays in the world. Montenegro also boasts the   second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon   as well as the largest   lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar, with the largest variety of bird life in Europe.
