Kotor Region

The town of Kotor is located in a secluded part of the Gulf of Kotor. This old Mediterranean port, surrounded by an impressive city wall built by the House of Nemanjiæ, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and it is protected by UNESCO. Between 1420 and 1797,

Kotor and its surroundings were under the rule of the Republic of Venice and the Venetian influence remains among the architectural influences. Further information regarding the history of Montenegro can be found at www.discover-montenegro.com

In recent years, Kotor has seen a steady increase in tourists who are attracted by both the natural beauty of the Gulf of Kotor and the old town of Kotor itself (right photo).

Montenegro is still the undiscovered "Pearl of the Adriatic" and is set to bring back the days when the rich and famous used to visit (such as Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Sophia Loren).

One of the largest Super Yacht marinas in the Mediterranean is currently being constructed in Tivat (right photo)and the first phase opened in the summer of 2009. Visit the Porto Montenegro website for more information.

The Boka Kotorska Fjord or also known as Boka Bay or Kotor Bay is one of the wonders of the Adriatic if not Europe and the world. It is the southernmost Fjord in Europe, one of the most indented parts of the Adriatic Sea and has been voted in the top 10 most beautiful bays in the world. Montenegro also boasts the second deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon as well as the largest lake in the Balkans, Lake Skadar, with the largest variety of bird life in Europe.

Along the twisting roads around the mountains you can find yourself on the beautiful Adriatic coast dotted with Stari Grads and little bays. Further travelling takes you onto Lake Skadar, the capital Podgorica and the beautiful ski regions of Kolasin and Durmitor. Here you can not only ski but white water raft, fish and hike.

With the nearly overhanging limestone cliffs of Orjen and Lovæen mountains, one of the great Mediterranean landscapes has been created. The famous poet Lord Byron said of Montenegro, 'At the birth of our planet, the most beautiful encounter between the land and the sea must have happened at the coast of Montenegro.'
